Watercolor by artist Takashi Nakayama
Captivating watercolor by artist Takashi Nakayama (1893-1978), signed and numbered No. 696. A true gem from 20th-century Japan. Stamped 'Made in Japan', this artwork is a display of Nakayama's skill and artistry.

This charming depiction portrays a rural man carrying two large baskets of flowers on a teebou, adorned in traditional waraji and sugegasa attire, delicately captured on paper. The watercolor is elegantly framed behind glass in a low-profile natural wooden frame, exuding timeless charm.

While the frame bears traces of gold-colored paint that has weathered with age, the artwork itself remains in excellent condition. The edges of the artwork exhibit minor foxing, discreetly concealed by the frame.

Measuring approximately 14"x7-1/2", the reverse may show ink transfer from previous backing material, the obverse remains untouched. The frame exhibits minor scuffing, with some wood staining removed, yet the carving pattern remains intact.

Please note, there are visible furniture staples used to secure the backing, and the wirehook eyelet is less than optimal in its fastening to the frame. Nonetheless, these imperfections do not detract from the overall beauty and appeal of this exquisite artwork."

Takashi Nakayama (1893-1978) was a Japanese watercolourist, working in a style that combines influences from traditional Japanese ukiyo-e prints and Western painting. His son Tadashi Nakayama (1927-2014) was also an artist and woodblock printmaker, and the two are often confused due to the similarity of their signatures.
