These two cannons are nearly identical, with solid brass barrels measuring approximately 28 inches in length, with a 3 inch bore diameter. They are mounted on heavy wooden carriages with four wooden wheels. The firing striker is marked "C.H. GILKS/TOWERHILL/LONDON". The right trunnion is marked "N200" on one and "N442" on the other. Gilks was in a partnership with Thomas Chilton in the business of ships' ironmoogers and gunmakers under the name of C.H. Gilks & Co. at Number 3 Union row in Towerhill London until February 2, 1875 at which time the partnership was dissolved and Chilton Mewburn joined Gilks. A copy of the dissolution notice from the London Gazette, February 9, 1875 accompanies the cannons.

Condition: Both are very fine. The barrels have an attractive untouched original dark aged patina and there are a few minor dings and dents. One carriage has some wood absent on the upper left side ahead of the trunnion and the other has a moderate splinter absent in the same area. The right side of one carriage has numerous cuts and gouges, with normal rough aging on the other side. The other carriage sides remain relatively smooth. The wheels are all good and roll freely.
