Fixed blade front sight and carbine style rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the receiver is marked as being made by the Burnside Rifle Co. and "MODEL/1865" with the four line Spencer address/patent marking. The carbine has a Stabler cut-off device and a saddle ring. The left rear side of the barrel has a JHC inspection marking with most of the components having single letter inspection marks. Two clear cartouches are stamped behind the ring bar base on the left side of the buttstock. Smooth forearm and straight grip stock with sling swivels. Although most Model 1865 Spencer carbines were delivered too late for use in the Civil War, they were used extensively by cavalry regiments on the frontier until replaced by the U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Carbine.

Condition: Fine. The barrel and barrel band retain 50% faded original blue finish with the balance a mottled brown patina. The remaining metal surfaces retain 30% original case colors. The wood is very fine with crisp cartouches and a hairline crack near the buttplate and a few minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
