Rare and Desirable Three Digit Serial Number Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army Revolver

Estimate: $9500 - 14000
Manufactured in 1860 (the first year of production), this revolver is one of approximately 4,000 Colt Model 1860 Army Revolvers manufactured with the fluted cylinder. These revolvers appear in the first 8,000 serial numbers and have a four-screw frame with recoil shields cut for an attachable shoulder stock. This revolver has a .44 caliber barrel that is 7 1/2 inches long. Both 7 1/2 inch and 8 inch barrels were manufactured for the fluted cylinder variation. Generally the 7 1/2 inch barrel was part of the early production run of the fluted cylinder Model 1860 revolvers. The trigger guard is brass and the back strap is iron, with both being silver plated. The barrel and cylinder were once blue with a casehardened frame. Fitted with a one-piece varnished walnut grip. Standard blade and hammer notch sights. The serial number is stamped in a cylinder flute and the 1850 patent date does not appear in a cylinder flute. The top of the barrel is marked "-ADDRESS COL SAML COLT HARTFORD CT-" and "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped on the left side of the frame. The left side of the trigger guard is stamped with the letters "S" and "G". All serial numbers match, including the wedge and cylinder pin.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 817
Condition: Fine. The revolver has traces of blue with the balance a crisp smooth mottled gray patina with the grip straps retaining 70% original silver plating. The grip is very fine with a chip missing near the bottom and some minor handling marks with most of the varnish remaining. Action functions fine, but needs work as the hammer does not hold at the half cock position. One will look a long time to find a Fluted Model 1860 Colt in this crisp totally original condition that could be Confederate used.
