Percussion single-shot dueling/target pistol marked “W. Jacot, 1834” on lock, London fine wire and Damascus twisted on left of barrel flat, hand engraved and in same hand “Campbell Striker & Co New Orleans”. The pistol measures approx. 15-1/2” overall, 9-1/4” barrel, of approx. .62 caliber smoothbore. Half-stocked in premium walnut. German silver trim. Iron engraved triggerguard. Adjustable set trigger. Nicely engraved lock and breech. Double gold bands. Typical English quality. Jacot was a well-known maker who obviously exported this pistol to America where English high grade arms were coveted. The pistol shows a hand-made period replacement hammer, which we would identify as American, that is a quality product by a gunsmith. The metal surfaces show a brown patina finish with some scattered erosion, pinprick pitting. The edges of the barrel shows some gripping marks on each side flat. The stock shows some breaks and repairs, and light refinishing. Small losses. The action is good and working. Many of these Southern agented pistols were pressed into service by the gentleman owners who became officer’s for the Confederacy. No firearm was wasted as the South needed arms
