Percussion dueling/target pistol signed “J.M. Happoldt, Charleston” on lock. 8-1/2” heavy octagon barrel. Measuring nearly 1” across flats of muzzle. .36 caliber smoothbore. 14-1/2” overall. Half-stocked, plain iron triggerguard, adjustable set trigger. Single platinum band at breech. The pistols are stocks in good quality figured walnut, checkered in Happoldt’s design with flattened sides and course checkering with distinctive border. The pistol shows silver escutcheon keys and meticulous quality this maker was noted for. The metal surfaces are good and show slight to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. Traces of case hardening at the breech. Stocks are very good with a mark at the lock screw from being scored, A couple of compression cracks, small marks, and minor imperfections. The action is crisp, and the pistol points beautifully. The wrist is engraved with a silver owner’s plaque. The Happoldt family worked in Charleston, South Carolina and their pistols are actively sought by southern arms collectors, and about a dozen are known. From the William R. Orbelo Collection.
