German Gewehr 98 Bolt Action Rifle, Reworked as a K98, with Death's Head Stampings
Produced at an unknown date, this rifle bears several marks associated with the Sturmtruppes (assault teams) employed by the Germans in the later years of World War I. Using combined arms tactics, light and fast infantry units would move in under cover of rolling artillery to punch through weak points in the enemy defenses, with machine gun and flamethrower troopers moving in to exploit the openings. Blade and tangent sights, with no makers marks on the receiver ring and a set of faint "eagle/ WaA214" proofs on the barrel, along with "two bar/ totenkopf" and "lazy S/ totenkopf" stamps on either side of the barrel ahead of the receiver. Milled components, with matching numbers. Smooth straight grip stock, with the totenkopf stamp behind the trigger guard, matching number behind the rear sling base, and a flat butt. With a metal muzzle cover and a bayonet with 9 3/4" blade, "88" on the spine, "74.R.1.182." on the guard, smooth grips and leather sheath with metal throat and tip.
