This rifle originally belonged to Emil Berg, whose family was well known throughout the Schuetzen world as excellent shooters and gunsmiths. Gun was originally made circa 1880 by Marlin as a No. 6 rifle. Gun was fitted by Harry M. Pope with a blued No. 5 weight half round barrel in 32-40 caliber. Shooter equipped with a Wind gage front sight, Winchester A-5 scope and Vernier tang sight. Barrel is stamped "H.M. Pope Hartford, Conn" and has Pope rifling code "21/1.41" under forearm. Pope style false muzzle and bullet starter are marked "383". Case-hardened action with Nimscke style floral engraving featuring a running deer on left side and crossed rifles and bullseye on the right. Action is fitted with Schuetzen double set triggers and Berg manufactured three finger spur lever with wooden loop insert. Walnut checkered with hearts and teardrop Perch-belly Schuetzen stock with Schuetzen cheekpiece and added comb piece. Butt stock is also fitted with nickel plated Helm butt plate with stock work done by Berg. Matching walnut checkered splinter forearm with horn tip, fitted with Berg palm rest with cork knob. Rifle comes with Pope grease pump initialed "E.B.". Pictured in Warren Greatbatch's book "H.M. Pope Harford 1887-1901" on pages 364-367. Includes an old W&C Scott catalog dated 1872 and signed in pencil "H.Berg" with shooting match clippings from 1878 to 1918. J.T. Livengood Collection. CALIBER: 32-40. S/N: 4054. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Good with barrel fading to a brown patina possibly from window storage. Action has freckling with sharp engraving and colors fading to silver. Wood has traces of original finish with usage marks and dings with most damage in handling areas. Good bore and mechanics with optics needing professional cleaning.
