This historic rifle was once owned by Dean W. King of Denver, Colorado. King, with this rifle in 1903, beat the World Record for Offhand Shooting, formerly held by none other than H.M. Pope, with a score of 908 out 1000. King was like a rockstar of that day also exhibition shotgun shooting for several gunpowder companies. He was also the Colorado Rifle Association president and wrote a regular column in Outdoor Life Magazine. This rifle was originally constructed by Marlin-Ballard, circa 1880, as a Union Hill No. 8 and was later fitted with three No. 4 weight octagon George C. Schoyen barrels in 33-40, 22 Long Rifle, and 32 Hudson calibers. All barrels are blued with the 33-40 caliber measuring 30", the 22 Long Rifle caliber measuring 28", and the 32 Hudson measuring 30-1/2". Barrels are maker marked "George C. Schoyen Denver, Colo." and are cut for Pope clamp mounts. The 33-40 barrel is fitted with a Schoyen false muzzle and aluminum bullet starter. The rifle has the 33-40 caliber barrel on it now with a Stevens marked 3/4" tube scope with crosshair reticle in Pope clamp mounts. Rifle has case-hardened action with floral engraving done, according to the paperwork, by a Denver engraver of the period. Action has Schoyen double set triggers, side bolt for bullet seater, and four finger loop. Walnut checkered Perch-belly Schuetzen stock with dish deck and cut-out at toe (King's idea) with nickel plated Helm butt plate done by Axel W. Peterson, when he worked for Schoyen. Rifle has matching walnut checkered splinter Schnabel forearm drilled for palm rest (missing). Rifle comes with Schoyen grease pump, Schoyen re and decapper, Schoyen mold and a side lever bullet starter. The extra 2 Schoyen marked barrels are in a wooden case. Rifle also comes with mammoth amounts of provenance from former owner John T. Dutcher. CONDITION
Barrels retain 90% fading blue with edge wear. Action shows 70% fading case colors with sharp engraving. Stocks have 90% fading hand rubbed finish with checkering slightly worn. Good bores and mechanics with scope needing professionally cleaned.
