Carved Kentucky Rifle Attributed to Peter Berry of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania
Flintlock Kentucky buck and ball rifle attributed to Peter Berry of Dauphin Co., PA, circa 1790. Rifle has been compared to signed examples and can safely be attributed due to carving and architecture to Peter Berry or possible associate. Rifle measures overall 53" with 48" octagon to round 50 caliber smoothbore barrel with rifle sights. Rifle appears to be original flint with single trigger control and early beveled edge two bolt brass sideplate. Full curly maple stock with brass hardware including 2" wide butt plate and flat brass barrel keys. Stock is raised carved with pattern resembling Berry's work in a floral design behind and in front of cheekpiece with wrist having floral raised pattern around tang. Rifle comes with older looking replacement hardwood ramrod. CALIBER: 50. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Overall good with metal having oxidation pitting with metal turned to a dark brown. Wood has visible restoration with 12" of forestock replaced. Finish has some questionable cracks as to how deep they run (surface or into wood?). Wood has had a definite coat of shellac at one time. Pitted bore with crisp mechanics. Rifle displays well and looks good for age.
