This cannon from the War of Independence was obtained by sea captain and ship builder Stan Rayner in the 1960’s when he was a South Seas Trader making a circuit of the Polynesian Islands and trading with the natives for many years on his self-built 73-foot schooner, the Valkyrian. In those days, this cannon was used as an anchor in the harbor where the natives tied their outrigger canoes. Stan Rayner obtained this cannon from the ruling chief and the history he was told by the chief, was that in the mid-1800s, the island was being attacked by neighboring natives and many were being killed on the island, including the Mormon missionaries living there. The missionaries asked the captain of a square-rigged ship anchored in the harbor that was from New England to send them help so they could defend themselves. Months later, another ship arrived from New England bringing the missionaries for their defense, this cannon. But since the missionaries and this island, that was 1000s of miles from the US, were of little importance; the ship brought a “second-hand” cannon to them, which was from the War of Independence (1775-1783). Later, Stan Rayner was told this cannon was valued at $10,000 due to its history. Stan Rayner was also a master carpenter and built the base for the cannon, as there was not one on it when he got it from the harbor. The base is old and one might want to have a new one built for it”. Cannon:43"x15"x8.5; Base:36"x28"x19". (Note: Descriptions for all items in this catalog was provided by Dianne Lassen). Oahu Auctions has not done any research of these items and makes no claims as to the accuracy of titles and descriptions provided by the seller.
